Dairy-free  doesn't mean you can't have a grilled sandwich anymore! In fact, quite the opposite!

There is a great pleasure to be had when making and then eating a grilled cheese sandwich. And just because you need to have dairy-free and gluten-free one doesn't mean you should miss out!

We've tested a number of dairy-free cheeses to find out which will deliver the best possible result, and we have to say, the Bute Island 'sheeses' are the clear winners.

Not only do they deliver on taste, they actually melt like a 'normal' cheese would.

If you don't believe us, check out the stringy melty cheese in this recipe.

It was a big hit when we tested it out on family!

You will need:

  • 1 pack of dairy-free cheese (we used Bute Island cheddar style) – cut into slices
  • 3-4 large tomatoes – washed and sliced (optional)
  • Dairy-free spread
  • 8 slices of gluten-free bread
Method:

Preheat the oven to 180°c/ 350°f/ Gas 4.

Lightly toast 4 slices of bread before placing on a prepared baking sheet and covering one side with a thin layer of dairy-free spread.

Cover the toast with slices of dairy-free cheese and then place in the oven for around 3-4 minutes until the dairy-free cheese starts to melt.

Carefully remove from the oven, and place slices of tomato over the melting dairy-free cheese.

Cover the tomato with more slices of dairy-free cheese and the place back in the oven for 2-3 minutes.

Meanwhile, toast the remaining 4 slices of bread and cover one side with a thin layer of spread.

Remove the baking tray from the oven and place the 4 slices of toast on top of the melted cheese.

Cut into squares or triangles and leave to cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy!
