Fabulous piece - thank you! The LEAP study has pretty much confirmed what I had heard some paediatricians querying for a little while - those that already are involved in or were knowledgeable about desensitisation programmes - that they had suspected this may happen.
It will be interesting to see what happens now with LEAP on! and if returning to avoidance causes the allergy to appear :(
More than anything it gives all allergy families hope - WE are investigating, trying to learn and trying to handle things better each day and so are the specialists :)
As for the ill-informed - I take my life advice from the Penguins of the Madagascar films... "Smile and wave boys, smile and wave...."

A lovely post right from the heart. I was a normal healthy little girl with no allergies at all until I suffered a severe allergic reaction to lignocaine in a local anaesthetic at the dentist. This medical incident triggered and anaphylactic shock and 20 years of allergies then followed starting with asthma, hay fever, allergies to all animals, wood, dust mites, creams, jewellery etc. I had to wear gloves at school as I was allergic to the wooden school desk and I had a rash almost every day to something that I reacted to in my environment.
The allergies seemed to go in cycles of around 7 years I would lose one and develop another one. (No food allergies though although maybe I did, who knows! I was advised not to eat peanuts though). The worst one started when I was 14 when I developed an allergy to the cold which was horrendous and plagued my years at high school. This was over 20 years ago now and so much has moved on in the allergy world, so much more help, advice and support is out there. My parents basically kept me away from everything I was allergic to which possibly could have made it worse but I won’t ever know. Maybe some things in small doses may have helped such as a visit to a farm when I was dosed up on piraton or stroking a dog as long as I had my inhalers but this never happened.
I agree with what you say that some people are never going to react to something anyway as its just not in therm to be allergic, and these people who say you should just try your children with something they are or could be allergic to is ridiculous and potentially very dangerous.
I am sceptical about this study too as being an ex allergic person (They have all gone now apart from asthma) I would still be nervous about eating peanuts in pregnancy or giving them to my baby as I would worry that my child may be likely to develop allergies because I had them. Its early days but will be interesting to follow what happens with this. Thank you for all you do, you are an inspiration x

A great post, most especially for your careful and compassionate approach. Yes, this study does rather turn things on their head, in a way that is already creating such 'gray' in popular understandings where already-allergic kids like your own rely on the safety of 'black and white'. In the face of such a cruel twist of fate as medical advice being turned 180 degrees around, your hope and enthusiasm for the families whose children are still young enough to benefit from this development belies a spirit of love and generosity. Thank you for sharing this heart-felt post!
